Doogee S1 Review – A Hybrid of Smartwatch & Smartphone
Today we are going to discuss a smartwatch called Doogee S1 which itself acts as a smartphone. This new terminal with the incorporation of a smartwatch and a smartphone offers us such features that are improbable to find inside a watch. This includes IPS, Android screen, 3G connectivity and data calls, robust design, heart sensor and there is even an extent for a camera in its small size. Doogee S1 – The best independent smartwatch for the best price
Doogee S1 smartwatch was released at MWC 16 and is now available from Chinese stores for a stupendous price (given at the end). Furthermore, in this review we have divided the features of Doogee S1 into the following categories:
Design & Appearance
Starting with the design of the product, it’s one of the best attempts by the manufacturer when compared to any other smartwatch. This time, Doogee has created a skeleton of CNC stainless steel enabling it to be 60% tougher when compared to other smartwatches in the market. The exciting thing is that they have done this without sacrificing lightness of the watch which is 95 grams. Oh! And the most important aspect for which Doogee is famously known for is IP67 certification allowing the watch to be dust and water proof.
It’s curved around the edges and you can see the shine on the body due to theanodizing coloring on the metal. On the top, you can notice the use of 2.5D glasswhich forms a circular look further glorifying its elegance design.
From the appearance, the watch has a rectangular frame like the traditional watches. Moreover, a medical grade silicon material is used as the strap of the watch which can tolerate any condition. The sad thing is that the band is not customizable.
On the left side, we have SIM and Micro-SD slot (sealed) which can be opened via screwdriver. Meanwhile, on the right side, we can view the two buttons (home and lock screen) and a camera in between them.
The dimensions of the product are 4.50 x 4.50 x 1.40 cm with a thickness of only 14 mm. In short words, Doogee S1 is robust, classic and light.
Display & Resolution
As we already the display of S1 utilizes 2.5D technology. Ignoring the 2.5D glass and rugged design, this time, we have the third generation of Corning Gorilla Glassfurther preventing the screen from any scratch or strikes. The size of the IPS screen is 1.54 inches on which a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels can be observed. It’s spectacular in low light and even in bright sunlight. Well, you can’t find a Full-HD or Quad-HD resolution in that small size as it’s a watch.
Performance & Storage
We know that there would never be a Snapdragon 820 or Kirin 950 inside it. This is because smartwatches are never meant for this purpose. They don’t have vast multi-tasking to perform. So, the processor incorporated inside the watch isMediaTek6572 (Dual Core @ 1 GHz) accompanied with 512 MB of RAM and Mali-400 MP as the GPU. This hardware is excellent for a low power consuming watch.
Heading to the storage, we have an internal memory of 4GB enough to store apps, pictures, and videos. But, if you want more space then the option of adding aMicro-SD card (up to 32 GB) is available. The availability of a Micro-SD card is an important feature that most watches are deprived of.
Camera & Connectivity
Friends, here comes the most interesting feature of the watch that almost every watch lacks. It’s the 2 MP (SW 5 MP) camera of Doogee S1 located on the right side of the watch. Although the pixels are not that much but you know that something is better than nothing and viewing a photo or video on that small screen also supports the statement.
The connectivity of the smartwatch is worth to be noted. First of all, it supports anindependent SIM (Micro) with a 3G network on it. Apart from this, it also supports:
- Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n
- Bluetooth v4.0
- GPS and GSM
- Call logging and messaging
It allows us to answer and make calls through the addition of a microphone and a speaker that sounds better than you might expect. All these features are meant to be in phones but are now available in Doogee S1 smartwatch.
OS & Battery
There are few smartwatches in the market, like the previously reviewed No.1 D5, which has its own Operating System. Luckily, Doogee S1 is also among these watches which comes with Android KitKat (v4.4). Not only this but it also comes with Google App Store and supports almost all Android applications. These includes Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter etc. But the cons is that with low-resolution screen the apps may not be that much vivid and responsive as in a smartphone.
The S1 smartwatch has a built-in 600mAh battery which provides the user 50 minutes of video playback, 240 minutes of music, 200 minutes of calls and up to 3 days standby operation. The reason behind the marvelous battery life is the energy efficient processor and the low resolution. The watch can be charged through amagnetic charging port with comes inside the packing.
Other Features
Alas! We’re going to discuss the features for with a smartwatch is designed. The first aspect to be mentioned is the accurate heart rate measuring sensor. The watch also acts as a fitness partner with a pedometer, calorie consumption, senditary reminder and sleep timer with social share. It also has it’s own music and video player.
Other than this the watch also supports multiple clocks which are not that much clear due to the low resolution screen.
